A poll conducted by Research Co. last September found that more than three of five British Columbia residents agree with four different types of automated speed enforcement. Fixed speed cameras (76%), Speed on Green intersection cameras (72%), mobile speed cameras (66%) and finally point to point speed enforcement cameras (61%) were surveyed.
Driver's licence restrictions are used to restrict the operation of motor vehicles until the driver gains sufficient experience in their operation to have them removed. About 92% of front seat passengers wore their seatbelt in 2024. We need to worry about the other 8% because over half of the crash deaths in 2023 involve vehicle occupants that were not wearing a seatbelt. People in rural areas are less likely to wear a seatbelt compared to their municipal neighbours.
I learned this week that Canadians are considered to rank 42nd out of 50 countries based on how good they are to drive in. This disappointed me until I sat back and thought about it a bit. Based on a bit of self examination and what I see happen around me when I drive I think that I have to say that we are not serious about road safety. Financial loss, injury and death are part of the cost of allowing everyone to move when and where they wish to.
