VIDEO - Ineffective Warning Signs, What's the Harm?

video iconThis video from Minnesota's Local Road Research Board explains why specialty warning signs often requested by the public to solve a perceived problem can actually make the problem worse instead of better. In fact, it can spread the problem as people learn to ignore these signs as just more background noise.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure maintains a number of web pages explaining traffic signs and pavement markings, including the Manual of Standard Traffic Signs & Pavement Markings.

This has to be one of the oldest road signs I've seen in BC; I would guess from the 50's as we've been using yellow diamond shaped signs with reflective paint for as long as I can remember.

I reckon the folks who live down there know about the train tracks by now, and it's not a road you're going to be travelling fast on. Plus the flashing lights and bells are pretty obvious.
