This 24 page report summarises recent research and knowledge from scientific studies about distracted driving. It also defines what it means to be ‘distracted’ when driving, discusses the impact of distraction on driver behaviour and safety, and what can be done to reduce distracted driving.

British Columbia's Motor Vehicle Act came into effect in 1957 with the main focus of regulating motor vehicle traffic on our highways. It is very similar to the current version save for the legislation on impaired driving, the use of electronic devices, driving while prohibited and vehicle impound as a penalty.

My house fronts a busy street and when turning left from my drive way in heavy traffic. I generally go through the northbound lane and into the Two Way Left Turn Lane, stop and wait to merge right into the southbound lane. I can’t seem to find legislation saying this is illegal in British Columbia but I haven’t found anything saying it is legal either.

The provincial courts handled 75,584 traffic and bylaw cases in 2016/2017, the lowest number in the past five years. Of possible interest in the report are complaints made against the judicial justices who hear these cases.

Robert Tomkowicz was issued a violation ticket for crossing a solid line and illegal use of an HOV lane while traveling southbound on Highway 99 in Richmond, B.C. The judicial justice in traffic court convicted him for both offences after a trial.
