Local Traffic Only Signs

image of local traffic only signQuestion: I was just wondering if you know the rules around the local traffic only signs? Is this sign enforceable? I have not found info in the ICBC signs section in the learning book or BC Highway code. I may be searching the wrong keyword or something.

I've always liked Indian River drive as it's a nice little quiet road surrounded by trees. I have wondered if I'm actually restricted from entering without purpose other than leisure?

Local Traffic Only

Local traffic only signs tell drivers that a road is closed to through traffic, but open for vehicles accessing properties on that road. They are usually used in situations like road construction, where the primary purpose is to keep construction zones safe by reducing traffic through the construction zone.

Your Situation

Currently, there is a small residential area with no other entry or exit beyond this sign. It would be interesting to know why North Vancouver chose a local traffic only instead of a no exit sign to advise drivers of this.

One allows general traffic while the other does not.

Regulatory Signs

This is a typical black on white regulatory sign that drivers must obey. It is an offence under section 125 of the Motor Vehicle Act if you choose not to follow the instruction. The ticketed amount for a violation of this section is $121 and two penalty points.

The District of North Vancouver does not mention local traffic in it's Street and Traffic Bylaw so it is not possible for the enforcement officer to issue a bylaw ticket instead of a provincial traffic ticket.

What is Local Traffic?

Local traffic includes the residents that live on the streets past this sign and visitors to their homes. Traffic with no business at homes in the area is prohibited.
