Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) has received numerous complaints and enquiries regarding vehicles operating on the highway without the driver and / or passenger door(s) in place. Any vehicle operating on the highway without doors represents a serious safety concern for the occupants as side intrusion protection and passenger containment would be compromised in the event of a collision.

Requirement for Doors
The Motor Vehicle Act Regulations require them to be installed on all vehicles that were manufactured with them:
Doors shall be installed in a vehicle where the vehicle was manufactured with doors. The doors with which a vehicle is equipped shall be in good working order, and any hinge, latch, or handle must not be missing, broken or inoperable.
Which Vehicles Were Built Without Doors?
CVSE has determined that ONLY the Jeep “CJ” model manufactured prior to 1986 may have been
manufactured without doors as original equipment.
Vehicles generally show the options that they were built with on the option codes label:
My research suggests that all Jeeps were built with doors and that there is no option code to refer to in order to show that a particular vehicle was built without them or not.
There are websites that offer to generate build sheets by VIN if the manufacturer provides access.
Remember Your Mirrors
CVSE has determined that the majority of side mirrors on Jeeps are affixed to the door. Any
vehicle operating on highway without a driver’s side rear view mirror would be in violation of MVAR
Division 7.04(2).
Operation Off Road
The Motor Vehicle Act Regulations do not apply to the operation of vehicles being used off road. "Off road" would be a location where the vehicle can be used when unlicensed. In this case the vehicle could be driven without doors installed.
