Commercial Vehicle Safety & Enforcement receives many inquiries regarding the application and compliance of aftermarket window tinting products. This vehicle safety and standards bulletin is intended to clarify existing Motor Vehicle Act Regulations and insure proper vehicle compliance with these requirements while operating a vehicle on the highway.
Bulletin #3 - 2008 has been removed from the CVSE website but the following quote contains the pertinent information:
This regulation prohibits the application of any window tinting below 75mm from the top of the windshield and ANY DRIVERS DOOR AND FRONT PASSENGER DOOR WINDOWS. There are NO EXEMPTIONS, PERMITS OR PERMISSIONS available to contravene this regulation.
It is an offence to operate any vehicle on highway in contravention of this regulation and drivers are subject to enforcement action.
It has been reported that some vehicles have a clear UV (ultra-violet) reducing film applied to the driver and passenger side windows. While this particular product does not reduce the light transmitted through the glazing material, it may alter the safety performance of the glass. Individuals with sunlight sensitivity are encouraged to seek out solutions that do not compromise their driving safety. CVSE does not recommend the use of any UV film products.
