I've noticed something that concerns me in my travels lately, and that is the single long, narrow, curved tire marks that begin about two thirds of the way into a corner and end when the curve does. They don't appear in the traffic lane in the lateral position that one would expect of a vehicle travelling where it should either. These are weight shift marks and indicate a heavy transport truck on the edge of a tip over.

The case of R v Zhang is an appeal in Supreme Court for three convictions in traffic court arising out of the provision of unlicensed passenger transportation services. Haiya Zhang was driving for Udi, a ride hailing service similar to Uber. He was not licensed under the Passenger Transportation Act, did not have the appropriate class of driver's licence and the vehicle he was using did not have a valid inspection certificate.

September 1, 2021 saw the implementation of a new website location and design for ICBC's driver training information. This amounted to approximately 7,000 events that drivers were not held accountable for.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has announced that Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) will be required of applicants for a class 1 driver's licence commencing on October 18. 2021. B.C.’s program will exceed the minimum requirements set by the National Safety Code Standard for entry-level training of Class 1 drivers and will take at least 140 hours to complete.

Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement has announced that Transportation Network Services (aka: ride hailing) vehicles may now be equipped with identification signs in much the same manner as a taxi sign.

The use of these signs is restricted to when a vehicle is in service and available to the public for pick up only. Using such a sign is permitted in BC provided that it meets all of the following requirements:

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has installed additional portable toilets at select commercial vehicle brake checks, inspection stations and chain up locations to provide more facilities to the trucking industry during the COVID-19 crisis. The map shows existing rest areas as well as the locations of temporarily installed portable facilities.

One of the critical concepts I learned as a collision investigator this that fully loaded heavy trucks have 50 to 60% of the braking capability of light vehicles. This assumes that the braking system is not overheated, has been maintained properly and is correctly adjusted.

Air brake systems also suffer from brake lag, a short time period that occurs between the driver stepping on the brake pedal and the brakes starting to apply.
