The B.C. Coroner's Service has released a report that summarizes all accidental, traffic-related pedestrian deaths that occurred between January 1, 2012, and November 30, 2021.
The report summary says that:
- Through the first 11 months of 2019, there have been 49 pedestrian deaths. The average annual number of pedestrian deaths in B.C. between 2010-2019 was 56.
- Between 2010-2018, the province’s crude pedestrian death rate ranged from 0.9 to 1.4 per 100,000 population. Crude rates within health authorities varied from 1.0 to 1.4 per 100,000 population.
- Deaths occurred more frequently in the fall and winter months. The month with the highest average annual number of deaths was November (7.4), followed by January (6.9).
- Twenty-eight percent (28%) of all pedestrian deaths occurred in Vancouver and Surrey.
- Fifty-eight percent (58%) of pedestrians were males. One-third (33%) were 70 years of age or older, and 59% were aged 50 or older.
