Drive Better!

RiskThere is such an incredible shortage of common sense about the practicalities of driving, as well as so many people who seem unable to think clearly any more. You cannot get people to drive better just by saying "drive better". I think the problem of poor driving habits and some of the emotional and health issues (fatigue, stress, aggression, time shortage) behind bad driving are more a social problem.

CASE LAW - Cue v Breitkreuz

BC Courts Coat of ArmsThis case heard before Justice N. Smith examines a collision that occurred when a car driven by Miquel Cue stopped in traffic to make a left turn and was struck from behind by a truck driven by Roy Breitkreuz. Cue told the court that he had been waiting to turn left for approximately 5 seconds when he was struck by Breitkreuz.

Bullying a New Driver

No Road SenseIt was not uncommon to be told that a new driver sign was not being displayed because adults took the sign as a signal to bully the new driver. I thought that was just a convenient excuse to give the policeman when you couldn't be bothered to make sure that the required sign was in place. After all, who wouldn't realize that a new driver deserved more room and a little leeway for mistakes because they were just beginning their driving career?

Racing, Aggressive Driving and Stunting

Street RaceWhen I worked on the Municipal Traffic Section in Penticton about 15 years ago I watched a young man on a motorcycle ahead of me in traffic on the summertime busy main street. He was first in line at a red light and when it turned green he cranked on the throttle and roared off down the street balanced on the rear wheel with the front one about three feet off the ground.
